While this is still undergoing extensive research, its early results show promise for those struggling with mental health issues such as PTSD and panic attacks. It has been proven to be a safe and effective way of healing past traumas through somatic experience in clinical studies and has seen success since its introduction.

Although it sounds strange and unconventional, there is actually some scientific support for these kinds of treatments. The study referenced above looked at how traumatic memories are encoded within neural pathways and found evidence to suggest that physical contact can disrupt them.

That doesn't mean the memories disappear completely, but they may lose some power over a person's behavior. In other words, the touch creates what they call access -- a doorway into those neural pathways which can then allow new memories to form or old ones to be reprocessed.
