WHAT IS REIKI?

Reiki (ray-key) is a powerful adjunct to many conventional therapeutic modalities. It promotes relaxation, makes you feel at peace, and reduces your stress. You start moving toward your unique physical, mental, and spiritual balance and your body’s own healing mechanisms begin to function more effectively.

In a Reiki session, the recipient lays in a quiet, relaxed position while the Reiki Practitioner places their hands on the recipient allowing the individual’s system to respond according to its built-in wisdom. The experience is very nurturing and relaxing and many times the recipient drifts into a dream sleep. Reiki also works in conjunction with other medical or therapeutic techniques to relieve side effects and promote recovery.

Reiki and the Chakras

Although Reiki and the chakras come from different spiritual and cultural traditions, they have many things in common. Today, many Reiki practitioners use the 7 chakras as a part of Reiki sessions.

The Crown Chakra Connects us to an awareness of oneness with source, integration of the whole, living in the now, meaning, devotion.  A conscious alignment of knowledge beyond words or intellect.  When in balance we feel empowered, calm, valued, present to the moment, trusting of ourselves and the flow of life.

When it’s blocked:  We feel confusion, fear, alienation, depression.  We may have very fixed thoughts on religion and spirituality, be black and white thinkers who are not able to go with the flow.

The Third Eye (or Brow Chakra) Relates to our inner vision, unity, perspective and divine spiritual wisdom, understanding, and intuition. When in balance we feel clear, empathic, focused, can determine between truth and illusion.  We are open to receiving wisdom, insight, and intelligence. There is an awareness of a spiritual connective realm beyond the physical.

When it’s blocked: We reject ideas of spiritual aspects of life, can be in fear of self and others, exaggerate truths, feel volatile, moody and are unable to self-reflect.  We only see the obvious, black and white of life. You may have trouble accessing your intuition, trusting your inner voice, recalling important facts, or learning new skills. And if your lower chakras—AKA the root, sacral, solar plexus, and heart chakras—and are unbalanced, your third eye will likely be as well, which may cause you to act more judgmental, dismissive, and introverted.

When it’s blocked: A third-eye blockage is associated with a broad range of issues, including depression, anxiety, and a more judgmental attitude—while physically, it’s said to cause headaches, dizziness, and a slew of other brain-health issues.

The Throat Relates to expressing our truth, communicating our needs and taking responsibility for decision making.  It also connects to our abilities to manifest our creativity. When in balance we feel we can relax, communicate freely, express ourselves, be who we are, honest, truthful, congruent. Also, be silent and intuitive.

When it’s blocked: We feel powerless to speak out, fear of being judged, rejected and this can lead to feeling out of control, hurt, sad, negative and resentful. Physically, this blockage can manifest itself as a sore throat, thyroid issues, neck and shoulder stiffness, or tension headaches.

The Heart Chakra Relates to our center of love, spirituality, humanity, and healing.  Our heart chakra is the neutralizing center of all feelings and emotions. When in balance we feel joy, gratitude, love, unity of divine, compassion, trust, faith, pride, acceptance, inspiration, forgiveness and empathy

When it’s blocked:  We feel jealous, abandoned, anger, bitterness, fear, rejection, envy, conditional love

The Solar Plexus Where the personality is formed. Relates to our feelings of being integrated into the melting pot of spiritual and earthly aspects.  This is our gut instinct chakra.  When in balance we feel positive, whole, self-respect, compassion, self-esteem, personal power, a sense of separate self, confidence, hope and assertive

When it’s blocked: When out of balance we feel powerless, worthless, self-critical, fear, shame, rejected and self-conscious.  There is a need to dominate and control from fear of trust in the natural flow.  Likewise, you’ll also possibly have a tummy ache of some kind such as digestive issues or gas.

Sacral (or Navel) Chakra The center for sexual energy, creativity, and pure emotions. Balances free giving and receiving of feelings and emotions. When in balance we feel brave, passionate, energetic, outgoing, confident, considerate, creative, spontaneous, excited, open, kind and happily connected to life.

When it’s blocked: When out of balance we feel unsure of ourselves in relationships, vulnerability and fear in expressing truths leading to suppressing needs, feeling betrayed, addicted, frustrated, regret, anxiety, stress, and guilt.  This can also be associated with physical sexual dysfunction, while also potentially experiencing fear of change, depression, or addiction-like behaviors.

Root Chakra

Serves as our foundation to evolve and build our personality. Our link to the physical world, earth, our roots, “being” grounded, our survival instincts. When in balance we feel secure, connected, supported, strong, trusting and safe.

When it’s blocked: When out of balance we feel insecure, angry, annoyed, irritated and worried about our basic needs such as money, food, and shelter.  A variety of ailments can occur,  including anxiety disorders, fears, or nightmares. Physically, the first chakra is associated with problems in the colon, with the bladder, with elimination, or with lower back, leg, or feet issues.
